Surprise!

Welcome back, warriors. We are in for a treat today. I saw the above video and, I said to myself, “yep, my readers should appreciate this.” On that, let’s dive into this video.

So we can immediately see that police work is dangerous. I can guarantee that The female officer did not expect a crazy woman to come out of the house swinging a knife. Just from her reaction of surprise, you can tell she wasn’t ready for that. As you all probably know, we in the law enforcement community must always be ready for a threat, but at the same time maintain a professional and courteous attitude towards civilians. It is a very tight rope all police officers should be able to balance. So as a result of the officer not expecting trouble, she found some. Don’t get me wrong. Watching this video caught me off guard. I wasn’t expecting to see some crazy woman run out the door with a knife. If you watch closely you can see the only thing the officer could do was put up her arms to block the attack and retreat. When I went to the academy I had an instructor tell me that in a fight between a person with a knife, and person with a gun, the person with the gun will lose more times than not if the start of the attack is initiated within six feet or less.
Just another piece of info for your toolbox. So first lesson here, always stay ready.

So now in the video, we come to a standoff. Luckily these officers were able to utilize the tools in their toolbox to end the standoff. I have to say that after the initial contact these officers used their training and were able to end the standoff. They had a K-9 officer use his dog to try to get the woman to drop the knife, but as you can see even after being shot to the point her guts are falling out of her body, she still wants to fight. So next less than lethal tool they used was a taser. Still think it was a good move because the suspect was still resisting even with a K-9 attacking her. Now one of the officers yelled tase her in the face. Probably not the most correct thing to yell. But all in all, I think he can get a pass on that.

So the big-ticket item in this video, the thing I want you to remember the most is always to expect the unexpected, while trying to maintain a professional standard. Knock on the door and back up 12 ft to give yourself that reactionary gap.

That will be wrapping up today’s blog. Remember questions and comments are always welcome and encouraged. And as always stay safe out there.
