Welcome back, warriors. There is a video I found online that I would like to discuss with you all. When most people think of police officers, they think of police going after the bad guy. But as aspiring future officers I want to show you there is more to it.
In this video, we come across an officer arriving on the scene to what appears to be a baby choking. You, as an officer, should take note of this officer’s deminer. From the start, he is in control of the situation. I have stated in previous blogs the importance of establishing and maintaining control, and this officer did just that. And as a parent, I and my fellow parents can attest to the fact having a child not breathing due to choking is very scary. I am willing to bet that the officer who first arrived on the scene was scared, if not very nervous. But the parents and bystanders would never be able to tell that he was. The reason is that although he was in a scary situation he was able to keep his calm while taking charge. The end result being he saved that baby’s life.
So how does one remain so calm in a situation like that? Well, the same way that a person can execute his duty while under fire or in a vehicle pursuit. It all comes down to training! And for this particular situation, the officer on the scene was able to keep his composer in this very scary encounter because he could fall back on his training. He knew he had the knowledge and know-how to handle such an event. Now let us try to imagine that the officer arrived on the scene, untrained and unsure of how to solve the problem. It would have been a disaster. The point being training saves lives. So with that, you young and aspiring officers need to take advantage of any training opportunity that is offered. In fact, you should actively pursue all types of training opportunities. They are just adding tools to your tool bag. And you want to have as many tools as possible. If you are not CPR certified, it is in your best interest as an officer to get that qualification. And as seen in this video you need to get your adult and child CPR qualification. As an officer, you will come across a situation that will require you to use CPR. Or maybe you will be able to save a loved one while you are off duty. There is no reason why you shouldn’t have that one tool in your tool bag.
So, just a quick recap, training saves lives. What else saves lives? Establishing and maintaining control of a situation. Use your training and always seek out further training opportunities. And that will wrap up today’s blog. Please feel free to ask me questions and comments are welcome too. As always stay safe out there.
